Boycotting Israel, least world should do
What follows is an approximate transcription of the interview.Press TV: We look at the situation on the ground and we see more and more people throughout the world actually demonstrating. Are we on the edge of something different? Is there a transition?And also of course before we had seen demonstrations with the prior onslaughts by Israel but then after it stopped basically not a whole lot was done actually to continue to put pressure on Tel Aviv. Do you think that we are reaching the point that this is changing?
O’Keefe: I definitely can see a massive change in terms of, if we look back ten years ago and in the aftermath of 9/11 in particular the Israelis took advantage of the opportunity in 2002 and just went crazy in Jenin and killed massive amounts of people, bulldozed people alive and really it was just for the keen observer that was paying attention that this really mattered.
Here we are a little over ten years later, twelve years later and it is an issue that is very much at the heart of everything that we are confronting in this world. I think more and more people are realizing that the way of Palestine is indeed the way of the world and in fact those that run Israel, that are carrying out these policies against the Palestinians, effectively it is the same interest that are running the world, keeping in mind that the same individuals that run the financial system i.e. have the money to be able buy anything and everyone that can be bought is running the show and the way that they are treating the Palestinians is exactly the way that we, all people around the world will be treated if we allow this crime to continue.
Press TV: What about boycotting and you just talked about well basically where the money is. It seems that the campaign to actually boycott the Israeli products is gaining momentum. Do you think that with this effort there could be success in actually pressuring Tel Aviv?
O’Keefe: Yes there is no question that boycotting is the least that we should do. I think people make a massive mistake when they think that in a world in which we live where a very small group of individuals, private bankers control the money supply I do not believe any of the books for any of the major corporations are legitimate anyway.
I believe that the same people that own the corporations own the governments, they own the court systems, they own the police, effectively they own the military as well, so they can cook the books and we can do all we want trying to not buy their products and I do not believe that that in itself is going to stop these crimes and I think it is very foolish to think that that would stop these crimes.
However, it is advisable of course that all of us with a conscience will not buy or purchase products from companies that directly support the … [entity] of Israel. But there is also another very important note to make about this.
The Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign which was a large number of small individuals and groups that signed on to this, the very BDS movement that started off with unanimous support of ending the entire occupation of all Palestine, only in the last couple of years has changed, their mission statement to include only pre-67 occupation. So it actually has deleted or eliminated the policy of ending the occupation of all Palestine.
So this is something that we need to pay attention to because if we give too much power to the BDS movement and then the BDS movement totally changes the demands of the Palestinian people and in particular the right of return to 1948 Palestine as well then this is very, very insidious and we must be very aware of this.
