FBI director, during Knoxville visit, attempts to clarify controversial remarks about Poland’s involvement in the Holocaust
KNOXVILLE (WATE) – FBI Director James Comey was in Knoxville Tuesday, visiting the local FBI headquarters and finally talking about controversial remarks he made last week about Poland’s involvement in the Holocaust.
He spoke at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum on the importance of Holocaust education, but he ended up upsetting leaders around the world.
“In their minds, the murderers and accomplices of Germany, and Poland and Hungary, and so many, many other places didn’t do something evil,” he said. ”They convinced themselves it was the right thing to do, the thing they had to do. That’s what people do. And that should truly frighten us.”
According to the New York Times, Poland’s Foreign Minister demanded an official apology from Washington on Monday, and while he got one from a US Ambassador, the FBI wouldn’t comment. Comey has also been silent on the controversy.
WATE 6 On Your Side asked the director Tuesday if he had an apology for his remarks regarding Poland’s involvement in the Holocaust. For the first time, he responded, but he didn’t have an apology.
“I don’t. Except I didn’t say Poland was responsible for the Holocaust. In a way I wish very much that I hadn’t mentioned any countries because it’s distracted some folks from my point,” he said. “I worry a little bit in some countries that point has gotten lost. There is no doubt that people in Poland heroically resisted the Nazis, and some people heroically protected the Jews, but there’s also no doubt that in every country occupied by the Nazis, there were people collaborating with the Nazis.”
U.S. Ambassador Stephen Mull apologized for Comey’s comments. Mull, who was summoned to meet with Polish officials, emerged from the sit-down and made it clear Comey did not speak for the U.S.

” … any suggestion that “Poland, or any other countries other than Nazi Germany, bear responsibility for the Holocaust, is a mistake, harmful and insulting,” Mull said after attending ceremonies marking the 72nd anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising against the Nazis. “Nazi Germany alone bears responsibility.
Rabbi Abraham Cooper, associate dean of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, a global human rights organization researching the Holocaust, said he could understand the Poles’ umbrage at Comey’s remarks.
“Poland, the government and the Polish people, have often been upset when people say, in shorthand, ‘Polish death camps, or ‘Polish concentration camp,'” Cooper said. “What is very important to note is these camps were in occupied Poland. Many Poles took up arms against the Nazis, in the Warsaw uprising and before.”
Poland did not have its own government that it could be an ally or collaborator of Germany. If I were an advisor to Comey, I would have told him not to use Poland as an example.
President Obama caused similar outrage in 2012 when he referred to a Nazi facility in occupied Poland as a “Polish death camp.” Obama subsequently apologized.

One aspect of the Holocaust still remains relatively undocumented and unexplored — the collaboration of Jews with their oppressors.
The Jewish Scouting Service — an arm of the Gestapo has used Jews to locate other Jews who had managed to escape detention.
Since the 1960s, the Holocaust has been presented as an aberration, confined to Germany and the Nazi leaders who held power during the twelve years after 1933. Responsibility has been heaped upon a few villains in jackboots and black uniforms, whose names have become synonymous with evil. Yet behind these nightmare monsters lay other spectres whose names are barely remembered; whose lives are conveniently forgotten.
Their names are known only to a few specialist historians of the period. Two were committed Nazis, perpetrators of the foulest crimes: Josef Blosche and Christian Wirth, both psychotic killers.
Stella Goldschlag was a Jewish woman yet she willingly aided the Gestapo and betrayed her culture and her people. Nicknamed by Gestapo as “Blonde Poison” she betrayed up to 3,000 fellow Jews.
STELLA is one of the few works, the first in the popular vein, to examine this phenomenon.

In an attempt to understand how Stella could cooperate with those bent on the destruction of her people, Wyden compiled this account of Jews who attempted to escape the camps and of their fellow-Jews who hunted them down. This is not a pleasant story.
Abraham Gancwajch was a prominent Nazi collaborator in the Warsaw Ghetto during the occupation of Poland in World War II, and a Jewish “kingpin” of the ghetto underworld. Modern research concludes unanimously that he was an informer and collaborator motivated chiefly by personal interest.
Chaim Mordechai Rumkowski was a Polish Jew and wartime businessman appointed by Nazi Germany as the head of the Council of Elders in the Łódź Ghetto during the occupation of Poland in World War II. He accrued exponentially more power as he transformed the Ghetto into an industrial base manufacturing war supplies for the Wehrmacht army; erroneously believing, that productivity was the key to Jewish survival beyond the Holocaust.

She provided information to the Office of Strategic Services which was used in a 1943 report on the personality of Adolf Hitler. In May 1945 she was released on parole and returned to Germany, where she cultivated influential connections in post-war German society.

Żagiew (“The Torch”), also known as Żydowska Gwardia Wolności (the “Jewish Freedom Guard”), was a Nazi-collaborationist Jewish agent provocateur group in the Nazi German-occupied Poland, founded and sponsored by the Germans and led by Abraham Gancwajch. Its primary goal was to infiltrate the Jewish resistance network and reveal its connections with the Polish underground aiding and hiding Jews in the General Government. The organization was able to inflict considerable damage on both fronts.[3] Żagiew agents were also instrumental in organizing the Hotel Polski affair in Warsaw, a German scheme to lure thousands of wealthy Jews under false promises of evacuation to South America into a trap and extort their money and valuables before killing most of them.
“SS member Karl Adolf Eichmann (1906-1962) was head of the Department for Jewish Affairs in the Gestapo from 1941 to 1945 and was chief of operations in the deportation of three million Jews to extermination camps. In 1935 Eichmann was working in the Jewish section, where he investigated possible “solutions to the Jewish question.” Eichmann assumed the leading role in the deportation of European Jews to the death camps, as well as in the plunder of their property.”
Many innocent people were killed during WW2 in combat and in the camps.
We must never forget that Jews were not the only ones to be sent to concentration camps. There were Catholics, ordinary Germans, political dissidents, Communists, Gypsies even homosexuals and people of many nationalities; mostly Poles and Jews.
Can popular historians in good conscience ignore these facts and simply focus only on Jewish exterminations?
Is it historically fair to deliberately dismiss non-Jews in the camps and focus on one particular people?
The answers to those questions are pretty simple: the Holocaust industry, as Norman Finkelstein would have put it, is a colossal hoax and exaggeration.
It cannot be allowed for revisionists, of whatever political bent, to selectively recall only those bits of Second World War history that suit their interests and ignore other historical facts.
