US Ready To “Fight and Defeat” Russia in Europe

The US is ready “to fight and defeat” Russia in Europe, if necessary, said the commander of European command U.S. General Philip Breedlove.

“We are ready, if necessary, to fight and win,” — said Breedlove at a hearing of the Committee on armed services of the U.S. house of representatives, to discuss measures to counter “Russian aggression” in Europe.

Earlier , the European command of the armed forces of the United States in Europe published an updated strategy for EUCOM in Europe, which identified as its top priority “deterring Russian aggression”.

Representatives of the West have repeatedly accused Russia of “aggression” — in particular, due to the fact that Russian troops allegedly were present in the territory of Eastern Ukraine during the events of the conflict; Moscow denies these accusations. Vladimir Putin last year, in an interview with the Italian newspaper Il Corriere della sera, said statements about “aggressive actions” of Russia are speculation to induce fear.

US ‘occupying’ Eastern Europe using ‘Russian aggression’ as pretext

A US military plan to send more forces into Europe on a rotating basis to purportedly counter a potential Russian attack is equal to a “military occupation” of eastern European states, a geopolitical analyst in Europe says.

“What is happening is that the US is militarily occupying Latvia, Lithuania and Poland under the pretext of Russian aggression,” said Joaquin Flores, director of the Center for Syncretic Studies in Belgrade, Serbia.

“When we really look at Russian policy, we can see that there is no policy of absorbing or attacking or controlling these Baltic states and Poland at all,” Flores told Press TV on Monday.

“It’s a US military occupation of these states which it feels it’s losing control over and it’s using Russia, the phantom menace of Russian aggression, as a pretext to continued military occupation of other sovereign states,” he added.

During a forum in Simi Valley, California, over the weekend, senior US military officials proposed plans to expand the American presence in Europe in a bid to counter Russia in the event of a crisis, the Wall Street Journal reported Sunday.

The new measures would allow for the presence of multiple US Army brigades in Europe at any given time, increasing that number above current limits.

Addressing the Reagan National Defense Forum, General Philip Breedlove, the supreme allied commander of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), said he wants more forces committed to Europe in a rotational manner.

General Mark Milley, the chief of staff of the US Army, said the Army is adapting its training to make sure that the US military is able to face threats posed by Russian forces.

The US has vowed to develop military training bases in six countries on or near Russian borders, including Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania, as well as Poland, Bulgaria and Romania.

Flores said that Washington is pursuing its own geopolitical agenda in Europe with the planned military deployment but there is tremendous political pressure in some European countries to avoid such military build-ups.

“This is primarily a psychological war being committed against the populations of Latvia, Lithuania and Poland,” he argued.

US Bases in Poland Part of US Confrontational Policy in Region

Washington and Warsaw signed a joint agreement on the locations of future bases for heavy US military equipment in Poland, the Polish Ministry of National Defense announced on Thursday.

“It is a part of the new aggressive confrontational policy of the United States in Central and Eastern Europe, the policy which is aimed at containing theoretical ‘Russian threat’ for these countries and which responds for the requests of the political elites of these countries which ask US authorities to place new military basis and infrastructure in the region,” Piskorski said.

The politician stressed that, from the geopolitical point of view, US military bases in Poland could be seen as a US policy aimed at building a range of allied countries controlled by Washington. He also added that this situation was typical for many countries in the region.

“The agreement between the United States and Poland is one of several similar agreements which have been signed lately between the US and different Central and Eastern European countries, for instance, the same goes for the Baltic countries which will have the US military bases there,” Piskorski added.

NATO has increased its military presence in Eastern Europe and the Black Sea since the outbreak of the conflict in south-eastern Ukraine in April 2014.

Russia has warned that NATO’s build up and expansion close to its borders is a provocative move and a threat to regional security.

“One must remember about the agreements between Russia and NATO made in 1997…which guarantee that no permanent military presence of US will be allowed on the territory of new member states of NATO, which means on the territory of the Eastern European countries. So this is a direct violation of international law, of the agreement of 1997,” Piskorski said.

The Founding Act on mutual relations, cooperation and security between NATO and Russia was ratified in 1997 in Paris. According to the Founding Act, “the member States of NATO reiterate that they have no intention, no plan and no reason to deploy nuclear weapons on the territory of new members, nor any need to change any aspect of NATO’s nuclear posture or nuclear policy — and do not foresee any future need to do so”.

The goal of the document was to build a long-term peace in the Euro-Atlantic area on the principles of democracy and cooperative security with joint NATO-Russia efforts. The Founding Act also paved the way for the emergence of the NATO-Russia Permanent Joint Council, the actual basis for NATO-Russia relations.
