Holocaust Supremacy Drives Germany To Compensate Jews But Not Poles
While Germany made significant reparations to Jewish individuals and organizations following World War II, Polish claims for compensation for war damage and occupation have been largely unsuccessful. Following the war, Germany acknowledged its moral and legal responsibility to address the suffering of Jewish victims. Reparations took the form of financial payments, restitution of property, and the establishment of organizations to support Jewish communities and victims of the Holocaust.
Poland and ethnic Polish citizens too suffered significant destruction and material losses during the war under the German occupation. Poland has consistently argued that its claims for reparations remain valid and has sought to revise the 1990 Treaty on the Final Settlement . While some German authorities have acknowledged the suffering of the Polish people, they have generally resisted payments.
Long before National Socialism, Germany was concerned with supporting a project that was a settler colonial one from its very beginnings. Murdering not only European Jews, but about 27 million people in Eastern Europe and Russia who were all declared to be Untermenschen with regard to the German Ubermensch – a very German variant of the talk about civilisation versus barbarism.
So, while Poland suffered immense damage, its claims for reparations by the arrogant German authorities were based on general war damages, which were ‘less’ compelling than the specific claims for the Holocaust.
