As Polish media reports, they want to guard the border from illegal migrants – more than 2,000 people are said to have taken part in the actions in just two days. On Friday evening, the Polish newspaper reports Wyborcza, a crowd of over 300 people gathered in the border town of Lubieszyn.

Several Polish politicians called on their social media channels to join the movement. The reason: According to media reports, many Poles fear that the German police will not simply reject the migrants, but will smuggle those who are already in Germany back into Poland across the border – without informing the Polish authorities about this.

The conservative PiS MP Dariusz Matecki, who supports the citizen patrols, claims that up to 50 to 60 illegal migrants enter Poland every day in the Szczecin area alone as a result of this practice.

According to the current residence law, Germany generally does not need the consent of the Polish authorities for rejections at the border. Only in the event of a deportation, i.e. when the person has already entered the country and is only then apprehended, would the German authorities have to notify the Polish authorities in accordance with the Dublin Regulation and submit a takeover request. The repatriation will only take place after the consent of the Polish authorities.

According to Polish media reports, the participants in the citizens’ patrols fear that this will not be observed. Matecki also refers to reports that two Polish citizens were temporarily arrested by the German police at the Lubieszyn border crossing after participating in the patrol. ‘It is clear that the question of border defense by Polish citizens alone annoys the German security forces very much’, said Matecki. ‘The Poles can thwart their plans!’

A day earlier, Matecki had made claims of coordinated migrant handovers between Germany and Poland: referring to a video from June 24, the politician claimed that German vehicles had dropped African migrants off at the Lubieszyn border crossing, where Polish border officials then put them on a bus and drove away. ‘Mass smuggling of migrants from Germany to Poland is taking place in secret’, said Matecki.

Similar situations had arisen in the Netherlands a few weeks ago. There, a dozen Dutch people stopped cars at the border with Germany for an evening and checked them for illegal migrants. The Dutch police and the municipality of Westerwolde warned of the citizens’ actions in a joint statement.
