5,500-year-old ‘Polish pyramids’ discovered in western Poland reveal Neolithic engineering

Polish archaeologists have found two megalithic tombs over 5,500 years old that teach us more about the burial practices and engineering abilities of one of Europe’s earliest agricultural societies. The structures—sometimes called “Polish pyramids” or “giants’ graves” due to their triangular, monumental shape—were uncovered in the village of Wyskoć, in General Dezydery Chłapowski Landscape Park in the Wielkopolska province.
The discovery was made by archaeologists from Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań during a field survey regularly conducted using remote sensing technology. The tombs, whose existence was confirmed through excavations, were constructed by the Funnelbeaker Culture, a Neolithic society characterized by pottery and monumental burials. The new findings are the second of their kind to be identified in the Wielkopolska region, the first being in 2019.
Up to 200 meters in length and reaching a height of approximately four meters, the tombs were constructed in elongated trapezoidal forms, with wide, high eastern fronts narrowing into tapering, low western “tails.” Such an arrangement, archaeologists believe, could have had symbolic significance and indicates an advanced understanding of spatial design. The structures were aligned to the cardinal directions, a sign of a sophisticated understanding of astronomy.
The tombs were framed with huge stones, some of which weighed up to 10 tons. Although they lacked modern equipment, the builders were able to transport these boulders, likely with low-technology but efficient methods using sledges and human power. Most of these stones have been lost or moved over the centuries, as surrounding peoples repurposed them. “Humans have needed stones for thousands of years, so naturally they took them and split them,” Artur Golis, Wielkopolska Province Landscape Parks Complex head specialist for nature and landscape conservation, told PAP. “Consequently, the objects have been quite heavily degraded.”
Even though the Funnelbeaker people seem to have lived in fairly egalitarian communities, members of significant social or spiritual importance—such as tribal leaders, shamans, or priests—were buried inside the tombs. The tombs likely each held a single body, laid on its back with extended legs to the east, and grave goods like pottery, stone axes, copper ornaments, or opium vessels.
