Executioners who later became victims
Is a historical fact that thousands of Jews actively participated in the destruction of their own people during the Second World War. A significant number were not only executioners but also formed an auxiliary military force in service of fascist totalitarianism.
In this respect, when examining the Jewish experience during the Holocaust, the traditional categories of “executioner” and “victim” blur and require re-examination.
To understand the full cruelty of the Holocaust, we must acknowledge a difficult truth: for various reasons, some Jews participated at different stages in the extermination of their own nation, by collaborating with or serving in German military and police structures, thereby directly supporting Nazi genocide.
Recognizing this fact does not end the discussion.
The term “executioner” will always be primarily associated with the Germans and with collaborators from other nations.
In the case of Jews, however, collective memory has largely excluded the possibility of Jewish perpetrators. This is because, in most cases, the Germans ultimately did not spare their Jewish collaborators.
After using them to facilitate the murder of millions, the Germans executed these “Jewish executioners” as well.
In death, they were transformed into victims and, in many cases, absorbed into the broader martyrology of the Jewish nation.
Their violent end has overshadowed their role as perpetrators, leaving their descendants with the image of martyrs rather than collaborators.
It is striking that, even seventy years after the Holocaust, historiography and public opinion continue to treat all murdered Jews exclusively as victims. This persists despite credible Jewish sources that testify to instances of Jewish participation in acts of extermination. With few exceptions, this uncomfortable subject has been met with silence.
One of the rare voices to address it was Hannah Arendt.
In the 1960s, in Eichmann in Jerusalem: A Report on the Banality of Evil, Arendt highlighted the collaboration of Jewish officials with Nazi authorities in implementing the “Final Solution.”
For this, she faced fierce opposition, as her work clashed with the narrative of unblemished Jewish victimhood that had taken root in Israel and America.
Reflecting on the backlash, she wrote: “A campaign to present my book in a false light was organized by Jewish directive spheres in Israel and America. Public opinion is poignant, especially when subjected to a skillful manipulation, as was the case here.
The issue which I tackled was the collaboration of Jewish officials with the executioners of the Final Solution. The issue came up during the trial, and naturally my duty was to write about it.
I am convinced that we shall come to terms with our past only on the condition that we start to judge it and muster the courage to be honest about it.”
Arendt’s words remain a challenge to our collective memory.
Only by confronting the double role of some Jews in the Holocaust , executioners who later became victims can history be faced in its entirety, without distortion or selective remembrance.
