General Stanisław Sosabowski
“In the long history of injustice, no one has been treated more unfairly than General Stanisław Sosabowski, commander of the 1st. Independent Parachute Brigade” – Norman Davies
On September 25, 1967, General Stanisław Sosabowski, the creator and commander of the 1st Independent Parachute Brigade, which he commanded in the Allied Operation Market-Garden, in the battle for “one bridge too far” near Arnhem passed away in London.

After the war, he was refused the military pension by occupied Poland and the British Army ( technically he fought under the British command at Arnhem ) He settled in North London and worked as a factory worker. Yes, you read that right. Allied General who worked in the factory. He never complained. Infact – no one knew until one days they saw a new guy salute him. The quiet hero of the Allied Forces who became the scapegoat for the madness of the Operation Market Garden.
Today Professor Hal Sosabowski who is Genaral Sosabowskis Grandson popularizes the story of this brave allied soldier, rediscovering his true story and deserved Justice. Sosabowski opposed the Market Garden. He saw it as madness and the unnecessary risk. It caused deaths of more
Than 30.000 elite allied soldiers. Young man who could have became everything.
As a side note – Hal is a Chair of the Public Understanding of Science at the University of Brighton. He was the first scientist ever to be allowed to do explosive demonstrations in the House of Commons in in 2011. Unlike Guido Fawkes Hal’s – explosives *did* work. .
Another side note. In the “bridge to far movie” there is a scene showing Sosabowskis jump. In the movie, prior to the jump he states “God Bless Field Marshal Montgomery” In reality – the movie script changed what he really said. The soldier behind him remembered. The first word had four letters and there was no “god bless”
Following Poland regaining independence, General Sosabowski was exhumed and reburied in Warsaws Powiazki Military Cemetery, where his grave is freshly decorated w red and white flowers weekly.
At last, He returned to the country his fought for.
