Connecting true geography and detailed unfolding of wide variety of crimes perpetrated by German/Ukrainian Nazis and jewish bolsheviks of Soviet Union on the Polish nation.
Operation Zamość was one of the most brutal and least known German actions of the war, a deliberate campaign of ethnic cleansing designed to erase an entire Polish region and replace its people with German settlers. It began quietly, without fanfare, in the freezing darkness of the night of November 27 to 28, 1942, when German units surrounded the village of Skierbieszów and neighboring settlements. Families were driven out of their homes at gunpoint, allowed to take almost nothing, and forced into columns that moved through the icy roads toward waiting trucks and holding points. One witness remembered the moment with stark simplicity: “They came before dawn. They shouted at us to leave everything. Mothers held their children and cried. The Germans told us the land was no longer ours.”
Over the following months more than 110,000 Polish civilians from the Zamość region, known as Zamojszczyzna, were deported. This included more than thirty thousand children. The adults were often separated immediately, some sent to forced labor in the Reich and others to transit camps where selections determined who lived and who died. Entire villages were emptied and handed over to German colonists as part of the wider Generalplan Ost, the blueprint for a German dominated East. Polish historian Tomasz Szarota wrote that “Zamojszczyzna was to be the first large territory in occupied Poland where the German dream of Lebensraum was to be implemented. The Polish population was an obstacle to be removed.”
The children faced a particular kind of cruelty. Torn from their parents, herded into barracks, examined by racial experts, they were classified like objects. Those who met the standards of “Germanization” were sent into the Reich to be given new names, new identities, and new families. Those who did not fit the racial criteria were dispatched to camps where disease, cold, and hunger killed them in large numbers. A report from the Polish underground described scenes of utter despair. “Children lay on the bare floor, sick, crying, dying. They called for their mothers who had already been taken away.”
Among the tens of thousands of children deported during these actions was a girl whose face would later become one of the most haunting images of the war. Czesława Kwoka, born in Wólka Złojecka, was fourteen years old when the Germans seized her village. From the chaos of Zamojszczyzna she was transported through the German machinery of deportation and ended up in Auschwitz. There she became prisoner number 26947. Her identification photograph, taken by the Polish political prisoner Wilhelm Brasse, shows a child caught between terror and confusion. Brasse later recalled the moment. “She was so young, so frightened. She did not understand the commands shouted at her in German. A Kapo hit her in the face with a stick. I saw the blood on her lip. I took the picture while she cried.”
Czesława’s mother, Katarzyna, was murdered shortly after arriving at the camp. Czesława herself was killed in March 1943. Her portrait, with its bruised lip and wide, bewildered eyes, is not only a record of her suffering but a testament to what was inflicted on the children of Zamojszczyzna as a matter of policy. Her fate binds together the story of the ethnic cleansing of the Zamość region with the wider machinery of German terror in occupied Poland.
Operation Zamość remains largely unknown in Western narratives of the war, overshadowed by more widely recognized atrocities. Yet its significance is profound. It revealed the full intent of German occupation in Poland: an emptied land, its inhabitants removed, its children stolen or left to die, its villages repopulated with German settlers. Historian Czesław Madajczyk wrote that “in Zamojszczyzna, German policy revealed its true nature, the destruction of a nation without pity, beginning with its children.”
The tragedy endures in the lives of families who never learned the fate of their children and in the villages whose populations were shattered. Many of the adults who resisted or tried to protect their children were executed or died in camps. The landscape of the region carries these memories even today.
Remembering Operation Zamość is to confront the reality of what German occupation meant for Poland. To remember Czesława Kwoka is to give a name and a face to the countless children whose stories vanished into the machinery of genocide and to keep their memory alive is to insist that the attempt to destroy a people, beginning with the youngest and most defenseless, must never be permitted to fade into silence.
