Although defeated Polish soldiers did not stop fighting

When Germany and the Soviet Union invaded Poland in September 1939, the country was defeated militarily within weeks. The Polish state was occupied, its cities bombed, its officers murdered, and its population subjected to brutal rule. To many observers at the time, Poland had vanished from the map of Europe.

But Poland did not stop fighting.

Instead, Polish soldiers escaped through Romania and Hungary, regrouped in France and later Britain, and continued the war alongside the Allies. What followed was one of the most remarkable military stories of the Second World War: a nation that had lost its territory yet continued to fight across the entire globe.

During the Battle of Britain, Polish pilots became some of the most effective fighter pilots defending Britain. The famous No. 303 Squadron RAF achieved one of the highest victory rates of any Allied unit in the battle. Many of these pilots had already fought in Poland and France before arriving in Britain, bringing valuable combat experience at a time when the RAF desperately needed skilled aviators.

Polish forces also fought on land across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. The Polish II Corps played a decisive role in the Allied breakthrough in Italy. At the brutal Battle of Monte Cassino, Polish soldiers stormed the heavily fortified heights that had stopped several Allied assaults. After days of intense combat, it was Polish troops who finally captured the ruined monastery overlooking the battlefield and raised the Polish flag above the rubble.

In Western Europe, the 1st Polish Armoured Division fought in the Normandy campaign and helped close the Falaise Pocket, trapping large numbers of German forces. Later the division liberated several towns in Belgium and the Netherlands, including the Dutch city of Breda, where Polish troops were welcomed as liberators and are still remembered today.

Polish soldiers also fought in North Africa. The Polish Independent Carpathian Rifle Brigade defended the Libyan port of Tobruk against German and Italian forces during the long siege of 1941. Their stubborn resistance became part of the Allied defense of North Africa.

At sea, Polish naval vessels served alongside the Royal Navy throughout the war, escorting convoys across the Atlantic and participating in major naval operations. Polish intelligence also played a crucial role earlier in the war by helping break the German Enigma machine, a breakthrough that significantly aided Allied code-breaking efforts.

By the end of the war, Polish forces had fought in the skies over Britain, the deserts of North Africa, the mountains of Italy, the beaches of Normandy, and the cities of Western Europe.

Yet the tragic irony of this story came at the moment of victory.

In June 1946, when the Allies held the great Victory Parade in London to celebrate the defeat of Nazi Germany, the Polish armed forces who had fought alongside Britain were not invited to march. The reason was political. By that time, Poland had fallen under Soviet control, and the Western Allies feared offending Joseph Stalin, whose government now dominated the country.

The soldiers who had fought for a free Poland in exile stood aside while others celebrated the victory they had helped achieve.

Many of those men never returned to their homeland. The new communist government in Poland viewed them with suspicion or hostility, and thousands remained in exile in Britain and other countries.

Still, their story remains one of extraordinary determination. Poland may have been occupied, its cities destroyed and its people scattered, but its soldiers never stopped fighting. And though they were absent from the victory parade, their sacrifice remains written across the battlefields of Europe.
