Jail time for ‘Polish’ death camps term

So many different media around the world still use the expression ‘Polish death camps’ or ‘Polish concentration camps’ when writing about German camps in Nazi-occupied Poland during World War II.  Auschwitz Museum wants to stop this mistake from spreading and falsifying history.

Ignorance of history and unfamiliarity with it make different sorts of
pathetic journalists speak and write about Auschwitz-Birkenau as of “a
Polish concentration camp”. The same term is used in relation to
Majdanek, Gross-Rosen and Sobibor. Sometimes there is no help for
stupid people – you have to accept them as they are. Each and every of
these camps was an element in Nazi camp created by Germans.
The viciousness and the perversity of history have caused that the
communist government starting occupation of Poland decided to take
advantage of Nazi German idea of concentration camps and death camps to dispose of their enemies too – the real and the imaginary ones.
Unfortunately the demonic giggle of sad history became a fact in the
term of “Polish concentration camps”. Such camps were existent. There
were about one thousand of them in total – mainly hidden behind the
name of “labor camps” but there were “concentration camps” and
“concentration convents” [for catholic nuns] too. The history of
system formed by Germans so often changing into terror endured in the “creation” of their successors – in Polish concentration camps built on command of communist comrades and then operating from 1944 to 1953/56.

“This will be a project that meets the expectations of Poles, who are blasphemed in the world, in Europe, even in Germany, that they are the Holocaust perpetrators, that in Poland there were Polish concentration camps and Polish gas chambers.” This are the words of Polish Justice Minister, Zbigniew Ziobro to private radio RMF.

A Polish Deputy Justice Minister,  Zbigniew Ziobro said that the new  government wants jail terms of up to five years for anyone who refers to Nazi German death camps as Polish.

Patryk Jaki told reporters: “Stop attributing to Poland the role of Holocaust author!” The ministry wants to include in the constitution a “legal safeguard for protecting” the EU member’s good name.

Poland was attacked and occupied first by the Nazi Germany and then the Soviet Union soon after in World War II, and was among the hardest hit by the conflict, losing millions of its citizens between 1939 and 1945, including over three million ethnic Poles in this war.

Polish officials routinely request corrections when global media or politicians describe as “Polish” former death camps especially referring to Auschwitz that was set up by Nazi Germany in occupied Poland, and which held prisoners of many nationalities, including Poles, NOT ONLY Jews.

In fact, the first prisoners in this camp were Poles.

Warsaw says the false term of ‘Polish Concentration Camps’ can give the wrong impression that Poland bore responsibility for the Holocaust.

This time it wants to make it a criminal offense, punishable by up to five years in prison, to implicate Poland in the atrocities committed by Nazi Germany on Polish soil.The major concern is a reaction to the widespread disinformation about Poland’s role in the Second World War, which has been perpetuated for decades. This is an injustice which Poles feel deeply. 

Even US President Barack Obama used the term in 2012 and later expressed “regret”. One might say that Obama’s comment was a slip of the tongue; unfortunately though, these slips are all too frequent.

Under the Justice Ministry initiative, a “public attribution to Poland for Nazi Germany’s crimes could result in a five-year jail term. And so it should!

A Polish citizen sued the German newspaper Die Welt for referring in 2008 to the Majdanek concentration camp as “Polish”, but the Warsaw court under the previous government dismissed the case last year. It is true that six of the German-run camps were in Poland. The country was under Nazi German occupation at the time. But it is simply not true that the camps were Polish, nor is it true that they were in Poland because the Poles were more anti-Jewish than other European countries. The reason was quite simple, in fact: there were far more Jews in Poland than in any other part of Europe, which meant they would not have to be taken so far.

A fact not widely known is that Poland was also the only country in Europe where it was a capital offense during Nazi occupation to give a jew any help.  Many Poles risked their lives and those of their families to help and hide Jews. Others were massacred resisting and fighting the Nazis.

And yet, one of the most determined contributors painting wrong impression on Poland is the ungrateful, jewish pseudo-historian and sociologist Jan Tomasz Gross, who writes slandering articles on the polish history. ( I would like to see his diploma in history..Admin). The office of Poland’s President Andrzej Duda said recently it might strip Gross of the Order of Merit he received in 1996.

And rightly so !

The latest attack on Poland’s good name is the conspiracy of jewish lobbies seeking additional funding to support their holocaust industry and to claim financial restitution for the pre-war jewish properties in Poland. Most of these properties were destroyed in the war by the Germans and the Soviet armies. Therefore the jews knock in the wrong doors.

Poland has suffered incalculable material loses and yet not even one ethnic Pole was compensated ! Apart from the lost lives, decimated infrastructure; bombarded and burnt properties and stolen wealth, some  graciously’ have been returned; such as the piece by Venetian artist Francesco Guardi, entitled “Palace Stairs”in 2014. A small gesture in comparison to hundreds or thousands stolen art still hidden in private hands, and some unceremoniously on display in some German museums. Returning plunder to its rightful owner may sound straightforward, but in practice it is extremely difficult, particularly for objects seized in the distant past. Who the ‘rightful’ owner is seems to depend largely on your point of view and who may no longer be alive.

One might think that Poles are being over-sensitive.  But the false allegations happen constantly. This is a battle which, it seems, Poland will never stop having to fight and therefore Poles have every right to get upset and finally do something about to stop it.

‘Polish death camps’?   Think again !

Poland’s government is echoing what many Poles feel: that they would simply like them to stop being referred to as such.
