The capitulation of the Warsaw Uprising
On the night of 2-3 October 1944 the capitulation of the Warsaw Uprising was signed.
Poorly armed insurgents resisted for 63 days, but the price was high. About 16,000 insurgents were reported killed or missing, 20,000 were wounded. Civil losses ranged from 150,000 to 200,000.
Part of the civilian population was deported as forced labour.
Most of the left-bank Warsaw was destroyed, razed to ground.
In September 1939 Warsaw had about 1.3 million inhabitants, in the winter of 1944/45 there were about 1,000 so-called Robinsons hiding in ruins.
Disputes about whether the decision to start the Uprising was the right one or not, I leave to professional historians.
I would like to honour the heroism of the inhabitants and insurgents.
