Europe’s catastrophic floods included Poland
Storm Boris has left a trail of destruction in Central and Eastern Europe — claiming at least 19 lives with dozens more missing.
Europe is battling its worst floods in more than two decades.
Rivers were still bursting their banks in Czechia, while the River Danube was rising in Slovakia and Hungary, and parts of Austria and Romania have also been inundated by floodwaters.
The Czech-Polish border areas are among the worst-hit since the weekend, as gushing, debris-filled rivers devastated historic towns, collapsing bridges and destroying houses.
Flooding has killed seven people in Romania, where waters have receded since the weekend, six in Poland, five in Austria, and three in Czechia. Tens of thousands of Czech and Polish households were still without power or fresh water.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk held an emergency meeting on Monday and later declared a disaster in flooded areas, a government measure to facilitate evacuation and rescues.
Residents in Poland’s south-western town of Nysa have been told to flee for higher ground.
Overnight, volunteers helped rescue workers heave sandbags to build up the broken embankment around Nysa. Firefighters and soldiers have also spent the night reinforcing river embankments in the City of Wroclaw in southwestern Poland with sandbags.
The worst floods to hit central Europe in at least two decades have left a trail of destruction from Romania to Poland, spreading mud and debris in towns, destroying bridges, submerging cars and leaving authorities and householders with a bill for damages that will run into billions of dollars.
Authorities in the Czech Republic announced the death of a fourth person in that country on Wednesday, bringing the death toll across the region to at least 23. Seven people have been killed in Romania, seven in Poland, and five in Austria.
In Poland’s third-largest city Wroclaw, lines of people passed sandbags to fortify river banks and to protect buildings, while further south soldiers built walls of sandbags on the banks of the Oder.
Authorities expect waters to peak in Wroclaw on Thursday. The Polish defence ministry said more than 14,000 soldiers had been deployed to flood-hit regions, with the armed forces using helicopters to evacuate people and strengthen flood defences, while drones monitored the situation from above. At a water level measurement station near Wroclaw, the Oder had already significantly exceeded the alarm level. Sandbags were passed along lines of residents and civil protection workers to fortify riverbanks and buildings, helped by some of the Polish soldiers sent to the worst-hit areas. Army helicopters dumped more bags to strengthen emergency dams.
More than five times the average rainfall for the whole of September has fallen in five days on swathes of Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia, triggering devastating flooding that has killed 23 people in four countries.
Beyond the human cost, member states will be struggling to cope with mounting damage repair bills and the lengthy recovery periods from this disaster.

Strangely enough, the floods fell on the countries of The Visegrád Group which the EU hated. It’s none of the mere coincidence, but it might be a HAARP-generated geoengineering scheme.
Maybe I am out of touch with events beyond my scope, but US media seems ignorant of events outside its narrow focus. You help me to appreciate the extent of damage in central Europe due to storm Boris, and the flooding. My maps don’t show the rivers you name, so I’m glad for your explanations, as usual.
