Jewish-Nazi Collaboration is Excused: Polish Collaboration is Not
There is a clear double standard on Poles being blamed for Nazi collaboration–while Jews get a pass. All of the canned excuses invoked by Jews apply to all other collaborators. It is untrue that the Jews, for the longest time, had a special fear of the Nazis that validly excused their collaboration. In fact, if anything, the Jews were so pro-German that they were very slow in internalizing the Nazi enmity against them, and even slower in grasping the reality and magnitude of the eventual German-made Holocaust once it actually began. Nor is it true that the Germans simply forced their will on the Jews.
The Jewish Councils (Judenrats) were partly voluntary. They were a form of Jewish self-government that meant that the Jews were pursuing their own policy with the Germans, independent of the Poles, and had effectively made a separate peace with the German conquerors and occupants of Poland. This explains the relative “insensitivity” of the Polish Underground to the eventual Jewish tragedy.
When the time came, the Judenrat chose which Jews would be forced by the Jewish ghetto police to board the German trains that went to undisclosed locations. The after-the-fact “self-preservation” and “save the best Jews” exculpations for this self-serving conduct are vitiated by the fact that Jewish awareness and appreciation of the new German mass murder policies were not instantaneous. Far from it. They emerged slowly, and were incomplete.
Any Jewish sense of the imminence of the destruction of Jews—as a group–developed still later. Now follow the money. The Judenrat was animated by a profiteering motive: to survive the war and make off with the money and belongings of the Jews they had dispatched.
