On this day, 17 September in 1939, a second dagger was thrust into the heart of Poland.
At dawn on September 17, 600,000 Soviet soldiers, backed by tanks and planes, crossed the eastern frontier, fulfilling the secret terms of the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact. Poland, already bleeding from the west under the German assault, now found itself crushed in a vice.
The Soviets called it “liberation.” In their official proclamation, they claimed to march in order to “protect the lives and property of Ukrainians and Belarusians abandoned by the collapse of the Polish state.” Yet it was not liberation but occupation, not protection but betrayal.
Winston Churchill would later write: “Poland was to be again partitioned and dismembered in the name of a temporary expedient. The shame of it will remain forever.”
For the Polish people, the Soviet invasion meant mass arrests, deportations, and executions. Families were wrenched from their homes and herded onto cattle cars bound for Siberia. In the forests of Katyn, thousands of Polish officers, intellectuals, and leaders were executed, their bodies hidden in mass graves.
Polish historian Norman Davies noted: “Poland was doubly invaded, doubly betrayed, and doubly crushed.”
The cruelty was not only in the act itself, but in the way truth was twisted. Soviet propaganda insisted they were rescuers, when in fact they were partners in conquest. The Polish state, fighting desperately for its life was carved apart by two totalitarian regimes working in cynical unity.
Seventy years later, Alexander Solzhenitsyn’s words ring hauntingly true: “In our country, the lie has become not just a moral category but a pillar of the State.”
The memory of September 17 reminds us that freedom can be lost not only to tanks and armies, but also to the betrayal of words. Poland was “liberated” into prisons, “protected” into graves, and “saved” into exile. Yet, despite the double blow, its spirit endured.
