Connecting true geography and detailed unfolding of wide variety of crimes perpetrated by German/Ukrainian Nazis and jewish bolsheviks of Soviet Union on the Polish nation.
There are questions that are comfortable to ask from a distance and questions that become unbearable when we move them closer to home.
“What would you do?” is one of those.
During the German occupation of Poland, helping a Jew was not an abstract moral dilemma debated in a university hall or argued across social media. It was a matter of life and death, not only for the person offering help, but for his wife, for her children, for the elderly grandmother in the back room, for the neighbor who shared a wall, sometimes even for the entire village.
The German authorities in occupied Poland imposed the death penalty for aiding Jews. Not a fine. Not imprisonment. Death. Often public and often exemplary. Sometimes extended beyond the individual to family members and sometimes accompanied by the burning of homes. Sometimes followed by arrests meant to teach everyone else a lesson.
So let us not ask this question cheaply.
Imagine it is 1942, you are a father in a small Polish village. The war has already hollowed out your world. Food is scarce and German patrols pass through without warning. People disappear. There are whispers of camps, though you do not yet know their full horror. You know only that Jews from the nearby town were forced into a ghetto and that now the ghetto is gone.
One evening there is a knock at your door.
A man stands there or perhaps a woman with a child – maybe just a boy. Mud on his shoes and in his eyes. He does not need to explain. You understand immediately.
If you give him water, you are breaking the law. If you give him bread, you are risking your family. If you let him sleep in the barn, and someone informs, your children may watch you shot in the yard or they may be shot beside you.
And if you turn him away?
He will likely die.
There is no neutral ground here. No safe bureaucratic compromise, no anonymous donation, no distance between you and the consequence. The choice is immediate, embodied, and total.
We must be honest about what fear does to the human being. Fear narrows the field of vision. It reduces philosophy to instinct. Your child’s face becomes more urgent than a stranger’s plea. Your mind begins to calculate. If I help, my daughter may grow up without a father. If I refuse, my daughter lives.
And yet.
There were those who opened the door.
Some were later honored by Yad Vashem as Righteous Among the Nations. Most were never recognized. Many were executed and we don’t know their names. Some survived in silence, carrying their secret like a scar.
It is easy to romanticize courage when the danger is past. It is harder to inhabit it.
Would you gamble your child’s life on the principle that every human being bears the image of God? Would you stake your entire household on the belief that evil must not dictate your conscience? Would you resist a regime that had already demonstrated it would burn villages in reprisal?
Or would you whisper an apology and close the door?
The uncomfortable truth is that most of us do not know. We flatter ourselves with assumptions of heroism. We imagine that our moral clarity would cut through terror like a blade, but history suggests something more complicated. Some helped, some betrayed, some looked away, some were paralyzed, some chose their own blood over another’s life, and some chose the stranger.
Poland under German occupation was not a normal society operating under ordinary risk. It was a world where law itself had been weaponized against mercy. Where the state criminalized compassion. Where the punishment for kindness was annihilation.
This does not absolve anyone, but It contextualizes everything.
If we ask, “Why didn’t more people help?” we must also ask, “Would I have done better under a rifle pointed at my son?”
The moral weight of that question should humble us.
It should also deepen our respect for those who did help, not because they were superhuman, but because they were ordinary men and women who chose to act despite very human fear. Their courage was not born in safety. It was forged in the knowledge that a single denunciation could end their line forever.
When we judge the past, we often do so from protected lives. We live in countries where giving someone water is not punishable by death. Where sheltering the persecuted does not invite collective execution. Where the state, however flawed, does not generally demand we surrender our neighbor to slaughter.
“What would you do?” is not merely a historical question. It is a mirror.
It asks whether our morality is conditional. Whether we are courageous only when courage is inexpensive. Whether we understand that in some times and places, the cost of decency is everything.
There were Poles who saved Jews. There were Poles who did not. There were Poles who were killed for trying. There were Jews who survived because someone opened a door and accepted the risk. There were Jews who died because fear won.
If we are honest, we must sit with the full tragedy of that landscape.
The question is not meant to flatter us, it is meant to disturb us.
Because one day, in some form we do not yet recognize, history may ask us the same thing.
And when it does, the answer will not be theoretical.
