History is never that simple

Zygmunt Hauptman once accused Catholic Poland of permitting Jewish immigration centuries ago “in order to have someone to hate.”

Statements like this have appeared in various writings over the decades. They are part of a long tradition of polemics that simplify history and turn complex human experiences into accusations against entire nations.

History is never that simple.

For centuries, Poland was one of the few places in Europe where Jewish communities could live, grow, study, and build vibrant cultural and religious life. That history included cooperation, conflict, friendship, and tragedy, like all human history does.

Then came the catastrophe of the Second World War, when both Jewish and Polish people suffered under the brutal occupation of Nazi Germany. Millions died, communities were destroyed, families vanished.

Reducing this complicated history to hatred directed at one people or another only deepens misunderstanding.

History should teach us something better.

It should remind us that human beings are capable of both cruelty and courage, betrayal and sacrifice.

The task of memory is not to pass hatred to the next generation.

The task of memory is to tell the truth and refuse hatred.

Never believe in hate.

One of the most important lessons of history is that truth is often more complex than the narratives we inherit.

The Holocaust was a tragedy of unimaginable scale, and its memory must always be approached with humility and honesty. In discussions about this period, Poland is sometimes spoken about in ways that overlook the reality of total German occupation and the extraordinary dangers faced by ordinary people.

Israel Gutman

The Israeli historian and survivor Israel Gutman, who later served as a senior scholar at Yad Vashem, addressed this directly after studying thousands of testimonies from Jewish survivors.

He wrote:

“All accusations against the Poles that they were responsible for what is referred to as the ‘Final Solution’ are not even worth mentioning. Secondly, there is no validity at all in the contention that Polish attitudes were the reason for the siting of the death camps in Poland.”

Poland was a completely occupied country under Germany. Unlike several other occupied nations, Poland had no autonomy, no collaborationist government directing policy, and no influence over German decisions. Camps such as Auschwitz-Birkenau were established by the German regime, not by the people who lived under its terror.

In fact, in occupied Poland helping Jews was punishable by death, often for entire families. Despite that unimaginable risk, tens of thousands of Poles still chose to help. Poland today has the largest number of individuals recognized by Yad Vashem as Righteous Among the Nations with many more waiting their turn.

Among them was Irena Sendler, who helped rescue hundreds of Jewish children from the Warsaw Ghetto.

Gutman later reflected that reading the testimonies of Jewish survivors forced him to reconsider earlier stereotypes that many Jews hold. Those testimonies revealed acts of courage so extraordinary that they unsettled him personally.

He concluded with a deeply human reflection:

“We are only human. We are not saints. Yes, there were blackmailers in Poland. There were also heroes.”

History reminds us that people lived under conditions most of us cannot imagine today. Fear, terror, starvation, and the constant threat of death shaped every decision.

Too many people today lack self-awareness. Empathy often stops at the borders of their own group. From the comfort of the present, eighty years later, it is easy to imagine oneself a hero while passing judgment on those who lived through fear, hunger, and terror we can barely imagine.

Before passing judgment on those who lived through unimaginable terror, perhaps we should first ask ourselves a simple and honest question:
What would we have done?
