The Danger of Losing Our Humanity in Holocaust Dialogue
When discussions about the Holocaust or the Second World War become arguments over whose suffering counts and whose does not, something essential is lost.
The tragedy of that era was so immense that no single nation or people holds a monopoly on grief.
Millions (sic. allegedly – admin.) of Jews were murdered in one of history’s most systematic attempts to annihilate an entire people.
At the same time, millions of non-Jewish victims were also destroyed by the same machinery of totalitarian violence, including Poles, Roma, Soviet civilians, political prisoners, clergy, and countless others whose stories are often less widely remembered.
When the suffering of any group is dismissed or ignored, we risk losing the empathy that should unite us in remembering the past.
Over the years I have often encountered heated exchanges online about Polish history during the war.
These discussions frequently become hostile very quickly. Instead of careful examination of evidence, accusations and stereotypes replace dialogue. This is unfortunate, because the historical record is complex.
Poland itself was occupied, its state destroyed, its elites almost exterminated and ordinary citizens were murdered, and millions of its citizens, both Jewish and non-Jewish perished under German and Soviet terror.
Acknowledging this complexity does not diminish the Holocaust, nor does it deny the unique nature of the Nazi attempt to exterminate the Jewish people. Rather, it reminds us that the Second World War produced a vast landscape of suffering in which many communities were caught.
One thing that is often missing in modern discussions is the effort to place ourselves in the position of those who lived through those years before we pass judgment.
It is easy to evaluate the past from the safety of the present, but far harder to imagine life under total occupation, where fear, hunger, terror, and death were daily realities.
Entire populations lived under regimes where helping the wrong person could mean execution for oneself and one’s family. When we examine history without attempting to understand those conditions, our judgments risk becoming shallow and unfair.
The danger arises when historical memory becomes a competition between tragedies. When suffering is treated as exclusive property, empathy begins to narrow instead of expand. Memory should never require the erasure of someone else’s pain.
For those who study and write about this period, the responsibility is clear. The task is not to defend one nation or another, but to pursue truth with honesty and humility. That means acknowledging acts of heroism and acts of betrayal, resistance and collaboration, courage and fear — wherever they occurred.
The past is rarely simple.
If we are to honor the dead properly, we must resist narratives that flatten history into slogans.
The victims of the twentieth century deserve something better than that. They deserve remembrance that is careful, humane, and inclusive.
Every life taken by tyranny mattered.
If remembering the past teaches us anything, it should be that human dignity does not belong to one nation, religion, or people alone.
It belongs to all of us.
