Polish tragedy in Volhynia
July 1943 marked one of the darkest months in Polish history:
During the summer of 1943, the massacres of ethnic Poles in Volhynia reached their horrific peak. On July 11, 1943 known as “Bloody Sunday”- units of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), often assisted by local collaborators, launched coordinated attacks on dozens of Polish villages, many of them while families were gathered for Sunday Mass.
Men, women, children, and the elderly were murdered with extraordinary brutality. Entire communities that had existed for generations were erased. Churches were attacked, homes burned, and those who attempted to flee were often hunted down. Historians estimate that tens of thousands of Polish civilians were killed in Volhynia, with the broader campaign in Volhynia and Eastern Galicia claiming approximately over 100,000 Polish lives.
For decades, many of these victims had no voice. Their graves often remained unmarked, their stories suppressed, and their families denied the opportunity to properly mourn.
When we recall these atrocities it is not about fostering hatred toward today’s Ukrainians. It is about honoring innocent victims, acknowledging historical truth, supporting the dignified exhumation of those still lying in forgotten burial sites, and recognizing that genuine reconciliation can only be built upon truth rather than silence.
May the victims of Volhynia be remembered. Eternal memory to those whose lives were taken simply because they were Polish.

The Village That No Longer Answers:
There was once a bell.
It called children from fields of wheat,
summoned mothers from warm kitchens,
and echoed through the quiet valleys
where no one imagined
their neighbor could become their executioner.
The bell is silent now.
Its tower collapsed into ash.
Its voice buried beneath wild grass
where nameless bones still wait
for hands gentle enough
to remember them.
Do not ask the wind
why it whispers through Volhynia.
It has carried too many names.
It remembers infants
whose cradles became coffins,
old men who never held a rifle,
women whose final prayers
rose higher than the smoke
that swallowed their homes.
The orchards still bloom.
The rivers still flow.
Spring has returned
a thousand times.
But there are places
where the earth refuses
to forget.
The dead are patient.
They do not cry out for vengeance.
Only for truth.
Only for a cross where none stands.
Only for someone
to speak the names
that history tried to bury.
There are those who say,
“Let the past remain in the past.”
But the past is not past
when mothers still search
for the place
their own mother disappeared.
The past is not past
when villages vanished
without a gravestone,
without a funeral,
without a final goodbye.
Do not ask memory
to become silent.
It is the last home
the murdered possess.
I do not write
to teach hatred.
Hatred built the pyres.
Hatred emptied the churches.
Hatred taught ordinary men
that children
could become enemies.
I write because forgetting
kills twice.
Once by the hand of violence.
Again by the silence
of those who inherit the earth.
If reconciliation is ever to come,
it must walk first
through the cemetery
that has no markers.
It must kneel
where the bones still wait.
It must speak,
without excuse
and without fear:
We remember you.
And so long as memory lives,
the village still answers
