10 July 1940 – The Battle of Britain Begins
On this day in 1940, the Battle of Britain began, one of the defining turning points of the Second World War. Had Britain fallen, Nazi Germany would have gained control of Western Europe, profoundly altering the course of history. Instead, the Royal Air Force, aided by courageous volunteers from occupied nations, stood firm against the Luftwaffe and prevented a German invasion.
Among “The Few” celebrated by Winston Churchill were more than 140 Polish pilots and aircrew, men who had already fought desperately for their homeland in September 1939 before escaping occupied Europe to continue the struggle against Nazi Germany. Though they had lost their country, they never abandoned the fight for freedom.
The legendary No. 303 (Kościuszko) Squadron became one of the most successful fighter squadrons of the entire Battle of Britain. Despite entering the battle later than many RAF units, its pilots achieved an extraordinary number of confirmed victories in a remarkably short period. Their skill, determination, and combat experience made them feared by the Luftwaffe and admired by their British comrades.
Polish airmen served alongside pilots from Britain, Czechoslovakia, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Belgium, France, and many other Allied nations. Among them was the exceptional Czech pilot Josef František, who flew with No. 303 Squadron and became one of the highest-scoring fighter aces of the battle. His story symbolized the unity of free peoples resisting tyranny.
The contribution of the Polish Air Force extended well beyond No. 303 Squadron. Polish bomber crews, ground personnel, mechanics, and support staff all played indispensable roles in the RAF’s victory. Their sacrifice demonstrated that although Poland had been occupied, the Polish nation remained at war and continued fighting on every front.
Churchill famously declared:
“Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few.”
Among those “Few” were the Poles, whose courage helped save Britain, preserve the last major Allied stronghold in Europe, and keep alive the hope that Nazi Germany could one day be defeated.
Their story deserves to be remembered not only as a chapter of Polish history, but as one of the greatest examples of courage, perseverance, and sacrifice in the history of the Allied victory.
