Holiszów German Concentration Camp

The liberation of the German women’s concentration camp at Holiszów on May 5, 1945, by the Polish Holy Cross Mountains Brigade stands as one of the most overlooked yet powerful moments of courage in the final days of World War II. Formed under the National Armed Forces, Narodowe Siły Zbrojne, the brigade was composed of Poles who had resisted both German and Soviet tyranny. Detractors have labeled the brigade antisemitic because of its affiliation with the nationalist right and its anti-communist stance, but such characterizations often overlook both the historical context of its formation and the documented acts of heroism its members performed.
In one of their final acts before the war’s end, these Polish fighters stormed the German-run subcamp of Flossenbürg in Holiszów, Czechoslovakia, freeing nearly 1,000 women, many of whom were Jewish prisoners awaiting execution. This act was not an isolated show of bravery. Throughout the war, Polish resistance fighters regularly risked their lives to sabotage German operations, protect civilians, and shelter Jews. Poland was the only country in German-occupied Europe where helping Jews carried an automatic death sentence, not only for the rescuer, but for their entire family, yet thousands of Poles still did so. From Żegota, the Polish underground organization dedicated solely to aiding Jews, to rural villagers hiding entire families in barns and cellars, Poland’s moral resistance ran deep.
What is less often acknowledged is how many Jews themselves joined the ranks of the Polish underground. Some, like Dawid Moryc Apfelbaum, served as officers in the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, while others escaped ghettos and partisan camps to fight shoulder-to-shoulder with the Polish resistance in forests, mountains, and urban battlegrounds. These alliances were forged not in ideology, but in shared humanity and in the urgent fight against a common enemy.
The liberation of Holiszów was more than a military operation. It was a moral stand. As the world teetered between ruin and recovery, Polish fighters, many of whom had already lost their homes and families, risked everything to save the innocent. They did not ask the religion or ethnicity of the women they freed. They acted out of principle, out of defiance, and out of solidarity with the oppressed.
Today, remembering this act of Polish heroism reminds us that resistance to evil often comes from those history tries to forget. It reminds us, too, that among the forests of Poland and the ravaged towns of Czechoslovakia, Jews and Poles stood together not just as victims, but as fighters
