Unusual White Blood Clots

A collection of white clots removed from a single body during embalming.

The main purpose of this stack is to provide photographic evidence, mostly released by undertakers John Olooney and Richard Hirschman. The pictorial evidence illustrates white clots they have removed from bodies during the embalming process. Blood is removed from the body to allow for the infusion of embalming fluid. On these occasions, as the blood was being drained, they were able to see clots which had been retained by their filtering systems. Many smaller clots were identified during this process and larger clots have also been removed by John and Richard. Using forceps, they have pulled out the long white blood clots from blood vessels, essential because the presence of the white fibrous clots prevented the free circulation of the embalming fluid and therefore inhibited the embalming process.

Just what are these clots and why were they not seen before 2021?

I have produced videos where I show photographs of these white blood clots and the videos are not taken down by YouTube. They are demonetised though, and I think this results in reduced promotion by the YouTube algorithm. Substack is an ideal medium to present high resolution photos, that in my view cannot be ignored.

In this video, (with AI generated imagery) I discuss a trilogy of January 2026 preprints investigating unusual long, pale, rubbery structures recovered from blood vessels, principally during embalming. The researchers call these anomalous intravascular casts (AICs).This is a good term as the clots do actually take the form of casts, modelling the shapes of the blood vessels in which they formed.

Reports of such anomalous structures have attracted attention since 2021 because embalmers describe them as mechanically and visually different from ordinary post-mortem blood clots.

As can be seen in this photograph, the white clots can be long and must be extracted from the blood vessels with forceps.

I guess I first heard about these blood clots in 2021, but to be quite honest was fairly sceptical about them. It sounded unrealistic that such bizarre structures could be removed from the intravascular compartment of deceased bodies during the embalming process.

However, my opinion changed when I was presented with what I considered to be incontrovertible photographic and video-based evidence. These photographs came from embalmers John Olooney in England and Richard Hirschman in the United States. Both supplied me many high-resolution photographs and video clips of these clots. This included video of one being actually pulled out of a femoral artery in a body which was being embalmed after a clinical post-mortem. In my view, these images constitute data.

Unlike normal blood clots these anomalous white fibre structures have tensile strength and can be stretched to a degree.

I also interviewed Major Tom Haviland several times as he has collected quite a lot of quantitative and qualitative data from undertakers who are actively involved in embalming. His results revealed a widespread and relatively common post 2021 phenomena.

This is a good example of casting, with the white clot adopting the internal shape of the blood vessels in which they formed. This looks very much like the bottom of the abdominal aorta as it divides into the right and left femoral artery, taking blood to the legs. The small artery in between is the cast from the median sacral artery, taking blood to the sacrum and coccyx.

Again, in this example, the internal shapes of the blood vessels as they branch and divide is clear to see.

It seems strange that these clots have been demonstrated definitively to exist by the embalming community, but not by the community of pathologists who you might expect to be leading the way on this. However, in this stack we have presented pathological scientific data proving the existence of these anomalous structures in the hope that this will be taken up and properly analysed by the scientific community. Clearly we need to know why these clots are occurring? Who they are occurring in? Are they forming before death, during the dying process or do they develop post-mortem? We need a detailed analysis of their structure and of the level of morbidity and mortality they are causing in our peoples if any. For now they remain an under reported and somewhat mysterious presentation.
