Arthur Bliss Lane – an American diplomat who openly criticized the West’s policy towards Poland after the war. Lane was appointed U.S. ambassador to the Polish government in exile in September 1944. After the end of the war, he arrived in Warsaw on August 1, 1945 and headed the American embassy until February 24, 1947.
During his mission, he observed the political situation in post-war Poland and was particularly interested in the issue of free elections announced by Western powers, the situation of the opposition and the growing influence of the USSR. In January 1947, together with British Ambassador Victor Cavendish-Bentinck, he organised election observation by 16 teams.
Reports then sent to Washington and London documented numerous cases of violence and forgery. It also documented immense pain and frustration, as well as NKVD actions to alienate Poland form western help ( so called “Kielce Pogrom” )
On February 24, 1947, Lane resigned from
his Position in protest. After returning to the United States, he described his experiences in the book “I Saw Poland Betrayed” published in 1948.
This book destroyed his diplomatic career. It closed a lot of doors. Why? Arthur just didn’t shut up – he told the uncomfortable truth.
After leaving diplomacy, Lane continued to deal with Polish affairs. In 1949, together with journalist Julius Epstein, he co-founded the American Committee for the Investigation of the Katyn Crime.
The first edition of Arthur’s Book is today an absolute classic of Polish post-war relations with the West. The voice of a man who took part in great politics, saw lies and omnipresent silence about the post-war fate of Poland. It’s a voice of nations desperate cry of injustice, that was used as a bargaining pawn for others to live in peace.
This book should be a must-read in Polish / Central European Studies
Unfortunately, this is not the case – and it is not accidental.
I dedicate this to Arthur – for whom integrity was more important than career.
