Silent Heroes
On the night of 4–5 August 1944, a Halifax bomber of No. 148 Squadron RAF, flying a dangerous supply mission to support the Warsaw Uprising, was shot down near Dębina Zakrzowska, south of Kraków. All seven crew members aboard perished.
Their names are engraved on the memorial plaque at the crash site:

C. W. Crabtree (United Kingdom)
D. J. Mason (United Kingdom)
A. Sandilands (United Kingdom)
These men, serving with the Royal Air Force (RAF), the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF), and the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), were part of one of the earliest Allied supply drops into Warsaw, risking everything to deliver aid to a city under siege.
Each name is not just a casualty, but a witness and an individual with a future and a family – a man who chose to fly into the heart of German-occupied Poland, for a city in flames, for a people fighting under impossible odds. They knew the risk and they went anyway.
Their sacrifice lives on in Polish memory, honored at Freedom Park in Warsaw and in quiet, local commemorations, like the annual candle-lighting at the forest clearing in Dębina Zakrzowska, where their aircraft fell.
Let us remember them not only as airmen, but as brothers in arms to Poland.
