Netanyahu’s historical ignorance

In the clearest and strongest terms, it was the Polish nation that demonstrated courage amidst the genocide of the Jews by formally appealing for Allied action against German atrocities.

On November 27, 1942, the Polish National Council passed a unanimous resolution urging the Allied nations to unite in response to the Germans’ systematic violation of all principles of morality and humanity.

This resolution specifically condemned the extermination of Jews in Poland and across Europe, describing these acts as the most horrifying evidence of inhumanity.

The resolution explicitly called for “retribution,” declaring with conviction:

“The day of victory and punishment is approaching.”

During this session, Deputy Premier Stanisław Mikołajczyk delivered an emotional appeal on behalf of the Polish underground group Front Odrodzenia Polski (Front for the Rebirth of Poland), which denounced global silence over the massacres of Jews.

The underground group’s statement powerfully stated:

“This silence can no longer be tolerated, whatever the motive—it is abject. In the face of crime, it is not permissible to remain passive. He who is silent in the face of murder becomes a collaborator to murder. He who does not condemn it gives it his consent.”

On December 1, 1942, the Polish Fortnightly Review devoted an entire issue to the genocide of Jews, emphasizing the liquidation of the Warsaw Ghetto.

That same day, Polish Foreign Minister Edward Raczyński met with British Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden to propose an Allied conference at St. James’s Palace aimed at addressing the mass murder of Jews.

While Eden agreed on the necessity of action, he hesitated over the specifics.

In fact, some British officials resisted, claiming there was “no reliable evidence” of the extermination campaigns even at this late stage.

One Foreign Office member, seemingly irritated by Polish advocacy, dismissed their appeals as an attempt to “make a splash as leader of the minor Allies.”

Nevertheless, the Polish government persevered. On December 9, 1942, Raczyński sent a diplomatic note to the Allied governments detailing the German’s aim to annihilate European Jewry and highlighting Polish efforts to aid Jewish victims despite dire risks.

The note urged the Allies not only to condemn these crimes but also to identify concrete measures to halt them.

This document was widely published in Britain, including by leading newspapers, bringing international attention to the atrocities but nothing was done and perhaps by this point nothing could be done.

It must be emphasized that these efforts were largely driven by the unparalleled courage and determination of Jan Karski. Karski, a Polish resistance fighter, risked his life to bear witness to the atrocities committed by the Germans.

Disguising himself as an Estonian guard, he infiltrated the Bełżec transit camp and gained firsthand knowledge of the horrors there.

He also secretly entered the Warsaw Ghetto to document its appalling conditions.

Despite the initial disbelief he faced from many, including Western leaders, Karski was relentless in his mission to alert the world to the genocide.

His commitment to truth makes him one of the most significant figures in bringing the plight of Polish Jews to global attention.

Oddly, much of the world remains unaware of the courageous efforts by the Polish nation to alert the world to the Jewish genocide during the Holocaust.

Despite the Polish government-in-exile and individuals like Jan Karski risking their lives to inform Allied leaders of the atrocities, these contributions have largely been overlooked in global narratives.

In a recent speech, Benjamin Netanyahu stated that no one came to aid the Jews during the Holocaust.

This statement reflects a significant lack of recognition of Polish assistance at the highest levels during this dark period.
