Remembering Two Occupations
June 29: One Nation’s Suffering
On this day, we remember that the destruction of Poland during the Second World War came from two totalitarian powers, not one.
On June 29, 1940, German occupation authorities carried out one of the largest executions of the AB-Aktion in the Kielce region. In the Brzask Forest, approximately 760 Polish civilians were murdered. Their crime was not violence or rebellion. Many were teachers, lawyers, civil servants, clergy, scouts, and members of the Polish intelligentsia, people the German regime believed could preserve the Polish nation and inspire resistance. They were executed simply because they represented Poland’s future.
At the same time, the Soviet occupation authorities were carrying out the third great wave of deportations from eastern Poland. Throughout late June and into July 1940, the NKVD rounded up tens of thousands of Polish citizens, many of them refugees who had fled the German invasion only to find themselves under Soviet rule. Entire families were forced into overcrowded cattle cars and transported thousands of miles to Siberia, Kazakhstan, and other remote regions of the Soviet Union. Many would die from disease, starvation, exhaustion, or brutal conditions. Those who survived often spent years in exile before they could return, if they ever returned at all.
Poland’s wartime experience cannot be understood by looking at only one occupation. Between Germany and the Soviet Union, millions of Polish citizens endured executions, imprisonment, deportation, forced labor, cultural destruction, and the loss of their homes and loved ones.
Remembering these victims is not about competing over suffering or diminishing the tragedies experienced by others. It is about acknowledging historical truth and ensuring that those whose voices were silenced are not forgotten simply because their story receives less attention.
Today, let us remember the murdered in the Brzask Forest, those carried away in Soviet cattle cars, and the countless Polish families whose lives were shattered under two totalitarian regimes.
To remember is an act of justice. To forget is to allow the victims to die a second time.
