The NKVD’s Anti-Polish Operation
On August the 12th we honor the memory of all the victims of the NKVD’s Anti-Polish Operation, carried out 89 years ago, prior to the outbreak of World War II. On August 11, 1937, Nikolai Yezhov signed an order, approved by Joseph Stalin, mandating the extermination of Poles living within the Soviet Union. This “forgotten genocide” claimed the lives of at least 111,091 Poles, though various estimates suggest the true death toll could have reached up to 200,000.
For centuries, a large Polish population had inhabited the lands that would later become the Soviet Union. They had lived there since the era of the First Polish Republic, which was erased from the map in 1795 following partitions by its neighbors. When Poland regained its independence in 1918 and signed the Treaty of Riga in 1921 to end the Polish-Soviet War, the nation’s new borders were shifted further west compared to the pre-partition era.
The communists viewed the Poles living in the USSR as an “unreliable element”, largely because they resisted the regime’s attacks on the Catholic Church and opposed communism in general. The 1937–1938 genocide of the Polish people was the largest ethnically targeted campaign of mass executions and deportations during the Great Purge. Simply having a Polish-sounding surname or speaking the Polish language was enough to make someone a target. The memory of this tragedy must never be forgotten.
