Stalin’s Great Terror

On this day, August 11, 1937, one of the most extensive campaigns of ethnic persecution during Stalin’s Great Terror began.

Nikolai Yezhov, head of the Soviet NKVD, signed Order No. 00485, launching what became known as the “Polish Operation.” It was justified with the lie that a vast network of Polish spies and saboteurs had infiltrated the Soviet Union. In reality, the operation targeted people simply because they were Polish, had Polish relatives, practiced the Catholic faith, or maintained some connection to Poland.

Arrests came at night. Families watched fathers and husbands disappear without explanation. Prisoners were tortured into signing fabricated confessions and condemned through hurried administrative procedures that offered no genuine defense. Many were taken to execution grounds, shot in the back of the head, and buried in unmarked graves.

At least 139,835 people were sentenced during the operation. No fewer than 111,091 were murdered. Nearly 29,000 others were condemned to prisons or labor camps. Wives were deported, children were taken away, and entire Polish communities within the Soviet Union were shattered.

These people were not killed for anything they had done. Their identity itself had been transformed into evidence of guilt.
