Zygmunt Jan Rumel
This is probably one of the more tragic stories I came across in my never ending studies of Polish Ukrainian relations. Why? bec it is about the man who truly believed in reconciliation, who believed that peace can be negotiated and that Poles and Ukrainians could live together in the villages of Wołyń. The story of a man who believed in peace, dialogue and human honour until the very end.
Zygmunt Jan Rumel was an outstandingly talented poet, an officer of the Peasant Battalions and a man who loved Volhynia. He was raised among Ukrainian youth, knew their language and deeply believed that neighbours could live side by side in harmony.
When Volhynia was bleeding in the summer of 1943, Rumel received the most difficult order in his life: he was to go as an official parliamentarian of the Republic of Poland to the UPA command to negotiate the stop of mass murders of the civilian population.
His friends warned him that he was going to certain death. However, he, trusting in his old ties and his soldier’s honour, put on a Polish uniform and went to the meeting without weapons. Unfortunately, international law and diplomatic immunity meant nothing to UPA. On July 10, 1943, near the village of Kustycze, the 28-year-old poet and his companions were subjected to inhuman torture and murdered in a bestial way. They were all tied to 4 horses and thorn to peaces alive.
To this day, Zygmunt Jan Rumel does not have his own grave, and his body rests in a nameless forest grave. The day after his death, Bloody Sunday broke out…
Let’s not let the memory of this sacrifice and great heroism be erased by time.
