German War Crimes; September 9, 1939
On September 9, 1939, the German 11th Company of the 15th Motorized Infantry Regiment carried out a mass execution of 300 Polish soldiers in Ciepielów.
Here is a letter from an anonymous German soldier that reached the Polish consulate in Munich in August 1950. Read on.
“We were in the woods near Ciepielów, not far from Zwoleń. The 11th company of our battalion had moved to the front, and we were following behind. I heard machine-gun fire; the vanguard had come under attack. The order came: ‘Dismount!’
Fear gripped me. I didn’t want any part of it—after all, there is no point in being brave when you don’t even know why. Nerves, orders, a skirmish line… I moved forward with the others but saw no Poles.
A machine-gunner was firing wildly, his weapon slung over his shoulder. Ricochets whistled through the air; one whizzed right past my right ear. Then Captain von Lewinski turned around—he was the first to be hit. He took a bullet to the head; the fire was coming from above. They were shooting from the trees.
I admired the courage of those Polish soldiers. We managed to spot one of them; a comrade shot him down from the tree… An hour later, everyone gathered on the road. The company had lost fourteen men, including Captain Lewinski.
The regimental commander, Colonel Wessel—monocle in his eye—was furious: ‘The sheer audacity of them, trying to stop us and killing my Lewinski.’
The soldiers meant nothing to him. He claimed we were dealing with partisans… That was a lie. Five minutes later, I heard a burst of fire from a dozen machine guns. I ran toward the sound and saw three hundred Polish prisoners of war lying dead in the roadside ditch.
