“Poland came back for its children today”
Clearly moved, President Karol Nawrocki said in poignant words, during the funeral ceremonies of ten children – victims of the German camp on Przemystowa Street in Lodz 1942-1945)
The President or Poland kneeled in front of 10 little coffins..
“After more than 80 years, Poland returned for its children, to give them their name
and a proper place of memory. What about dignity dignity ? No, because they never lost their dignity Those who abused Polish children lost their dignity every day in the camp near Przemystowa”
He recalled the stories of, among others, 17-year-old Zdzisław Kafarski, who was brutally murdered for reaching for bread, and 14-year-old Edmund Agaciński, shot while trying to escape from the camp. It was a crime committed in the past, but a crime committed against the future of the Polish nation,” he emphasised.
Among the buried were: Edmund Agaciński, Jan Frej, Edward Gąsiorek, Stanisław Jagodziński, Henryk Kadziński, Zdzisław Kafarski, Tadeusz Kalbarczyk, Alojzy Magdans, Zygmunt Olejniczak and Henryk Słaboszewski. Most of them died as a result of diseases and wasting of the body, including tuberculosis, pneumonia and other conditions. Some were victims of direct violence by German guards.
The remains of Zdzisław Kafarski were found in July 2023 during search work conducted by the Institute of National Remembrance at the cemetery at ul. Chickens in Łódź. Thanks to archeological and genetic research, it was possible to identify further victims.
After the Holy Mass, the coffin was transported to the cemetery of St. Wojciech, where a funeral ceremony was held with the participation of families and military assistance. The ceremony was led by Rev. Lieutenant Colonel Tomasz Krawczyk, parish priest of the military parish in Łódź.
German camp for Polish children at ul. Industrial operated in occupied Łódź from 1942. More than 2,000 children have passed through it. As a result of hunger, disease, hard labour, violence and terrible living conditions, more than 200 prisoners died. Today’s funeral became another important event in restoring the memory of the youngest victims of the German occupation.
