The Remains of 115 Polish Soldiers Recovered In Lwów – 87 Years After the Defence of the City
For more than eight decades, they rested in graves at Hołosko Wielkie. Now, 115 soldiers of the Polish Army who fell during the defence of Lwów in September 1939 have been exhumed, and efforts are underway to restore their names. Additionally, around 2,900 objects related to the soldiers were recovered.
The IPN, working together with Ukrainian specialists, has completed exhumation work at the site of the former cemetery in Hołosko Wielkie (Holosko), today within the city limits of Lwów, Ukraine.The remains of 115 soldiers of the Polish Army, who fell during the fighting for Lwów in September 1939, were recovered from individual graves. The discovery confirms information gathered through years of historical and archival research. Polish researchers had already carried out exploratory work at Hołosko in 2019, when graves containing the remains of Polish soldiers were located. Obtaining permission for full exhumation, however, took years.The work began on 25 August 2026 and was carried out by the IPN in cooperation with our Ukrainian partner, Ukrainian Memory, with the support of Dr Łukasz Szleszkowski of Wrocław Medical University and the participation of the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Lwów.The archaeological work has also brought to light an extraordinary material record of the soldiers and their final days. Around 2,900 objects were recovered, including elements of military equipment and uniforms, helmets, buckles, buttons, bayonets and identification tags. Alongside them were much more personal objects: wallets, coins, keys and religious items.The work is not over. The next task is perhaps the most important one: giving the fallen back their names. Researchers are now seeking relatives of the fallen soldiers. DNA samples from family members may allow some of the remains to be identified, connecting anonymous graves with individual soldiers and their families.Their final resting place is to be the existing Polish military cemetery in Mościska (Mostyska), Ukraine, where they will receive a dignified military burial. Permission to bury the exhumed soldiers there had already been obtained during the earlier efforts surrounding the Hołosko graves.Hołosko was one of the sites connected with the fighting during the defence of Lwów in September 1939, when Polish forces defended the city during the German invasion of Poland.During the work, the remains of 18 German soldiers were also discovered. They were recovered by Ukrainian Memory and transferred to the Volksbund, the German organisation responsible for locating and burying German war dead.
