Dead for Good Deeds
Such oppressive penalties for saving Jews during WW2 were introduced nowhere else except occupied Poland, Serbia, and some areas of the Soviet Union.
85 years ago today, on 15 October 1941, Hans Frank issued an ordinance that went into force the same day. It introduced death penalty for Jews leaving ghettos without permission and equally were to be punished all Poles helping these Jews, regardless of the form or extent of that help. It was not an empty threat.
Ignacy Ambroziak, a farmer from Cholewy near Płońsk, sheltered three Jews in his house. Hanged in public on 21 November 1943.
Marianna and Mieczysław Holtzer employed Jews in their farm near Tomaszów Lubelski. Shot on 2 November 1942.
Loda Komarnicka from Warsaw provided Jews with false IDs. Executed in 1943.
Władysław Łodej helped a group of Jews leave the Iłża Ghetto. Murdered on 31 December 1942, ten days after his parents, wife and four children died for his crime.
Father Adam Sztark, a Jesuit, encouraged Catholics to aid Jews in his sermons. Executed in Słonim on 19 December 1942.
Leon Stroszczyński, a farmhand, provided Jews in Krzyżowniki labour camp with bread. Beheaded in a Posen prison on 14 December 1942.
Alina Kaczmarska, a labourer from Zawichost, transported Jews. Died in a prison cell on 4 February 1943, following a series of interrogations.
Marcin Kowalik, a warehouse worker in Radom, accepted a letter from a Jew and promised to deliver it. Sent to Auschwitz, he was murdered there in late 1943.
These deaths, just the tip of the iceberg, are testimony to the seriousness of the threat. However, they are also a proof that Hans Frank’s ordinance, even though executed, paradoxically, didn’t work.
This ordinance was frequently reiterated in each General Government district. Poles were threatened with death not only for hiding a Jew against the law but also for lodging, sharing food, transporting from one place to another and even trading anything with a Jew. Moreover, the responsibility for this “crime” extended not only by owners of the premises concerned but also all lodgers end even informed neighbours.
It is estimated that more than 1,000 Poles were killed for aiding Jews. Poles constitute the largest national group within the Righteous Among the Nations recognized by Yad Vashem (currently over 7,000). Considering the penalties that threatened rescuers this number is impressive.
